Yuepu Music Space, a music and cultural education base initiated by the Chen Yidan Foundation in collaboration with Tencent Music Entertainment Group, welcomed the new school year. On March 6, 2022, Yuepu Music Space kicked off the new semester with an event titled "Joyful Childhood, Colorful Dreams," announcing the start of classes. This year, Yuepu Music Space will continue to promote its existing music literacy education courses while collaborating with local families and communities to organize a series of activities. This effort aims to create equal opportunities for Beichuan children to receive music literacy education and foster a healthier and more positive learning environment.
1. Using Music as a Medium to Accompany Children’s Growth
Yuepu Music Space is located in Dongsheng Village, Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County, Sichuan Province, covering an area of 300 square meters. It is an innovative and comprehensive music base that integrates spaces for music creation, listening, reading, and cultural exchange. Through a series of projects on music heritage, music education, music activities, and cultural exchanges, it supports the inheritance of Qiang people’s music culture and the education of children's music literacy. Since the first music class was launched on New Year's Day in 2019, Yuepu Music Space has accompanied the growth of over 300 children.
By introducing advanced music education concepts and offering a variety of courses such as guitar, bamboo flute, Qiang songs, and Qiang dances, Yuepu Music Space allows children to receive regular and systematic music literacy education. It also provides them with more diverse options for their relatively monotonous extracurricular activities. Through their learning at Yuepu Music Space, many children have acquired skills such as playing the guitar, blowing the bamboo flute, singing, or dancing, and they often perform on stage. Through continuous learning, practice, and performance, the children have not only improved their musical skills and artistic appreciation but also further built their self-confidence.
2. Promoting Family-Society Co-Education
After more than two years of operation and development, Yuepu Music Space has matured in curriculum development and teacher training, gaining more practical experience in promoting music literacy education for children in remote areas. The positive effects of music literacy education on children have been verified, but to stably and sustainably advance this cause, it must rely on the support from families and communities. Education is not a one-sided effort. Yuepu Music Space should connect multiple parties to form a strong alliance, creating a good ecosystem for rural literacy education and promoting sustainable education.
With this understanding, Yuepu Music Space has made corresponding adjustments to its work. In addition to the original music literacy courses and regular activities, this year, Yuepu Music Space will collaborate with local families and communities to revitalize surrounding educational resources and jointly carry out a series of cultural activities. These activities include handicraft classes that combine with Qiang cultural heritage, parent-child activities that foster close interaction between parents and children, and music-based fairs. These initiatives will allow parents and community members to experience the charm of music learning closely and frequently, strengthen the connection between families and communities, create a sound atmosphere within the Yuepu community, and promote the implementation of the family-society co-education concept.
